Part 5-1 is specifically about the devices used to control, signal, and interlock other switchgear and controlgear — not the power-switching devices themselves.

Panel cutout diameter is one of the first things to confirm. Common sizes are 16 mm, 22 mm, and 30 mm. Mixing actuator heads and contact blocks from different manufacturers is possible only if the mechanical interface is compatible — do not assume it is. Verify with the supplier.

Getting contact logic wrong is one of the most common panel wiring errors. IEC 60947-5-1 defines the terminology precisely.
Normally open (NO) — the contact is open (circuit broken) when the actuator is in its rest position. Pressing the button closes the contact. Used for start commands.
Normally closed (NC) — the contact is closed (circuit made) when the actuator is in its rest position. Pressing the button opens the contact. Used for stop commands and interlocks.
Momentary action — the contact returns to its rest state when the actuator is released. Standard push buttons are momentary.
Maintained action (latching) — the contact stays in its operated state after the actuator is released. Requires a second operation to return. Selector switches are typically maintained.
Illuminated push buttons and selector switches — contain an integral lamp or LED. The illumination circuit is separate from the contact circuit. The illumination voltage must be confirmed independently. A 24 V DC contact block does not mean the lamp is rated for 24 V DC — check the lamp voltage specification on the datasheet.

IEC 60947-5-1 specifies what must be marked on the device or its packaging. When you receive a product, these are the items to verify.
Rated operational voltage (Ue) — the voltage the contact is rated to switch under load. This is not the same as the insulation voltage. Confirm Ue matches your control circuit voltage.
AC and DC ratings are separate. A contact block rated 240 V AC / 10 A is not automatically rated for 240 V DC. DC is harder to interrupt because there is no natural current zero crossing. Always check the DC rating explicitly if your circuit is DC.
Rated operational current (Ie) — the current the contact can make and break at rated voltage. Check this against your actual load, including inrush for inductive loads.
Utilisation category — IEC 60947-5-1 defines categories such as AC-15 (control of electromagnetic loads, AC) and DC-13 (control of electromagnetic loads, DC). These categories determine the test conditions the contact was verified against. Match the category to your load type.
Mechanical endurance — the number of operating cycles the device is rated for without electrical load. Typical values range from 1 million to 10 million cycles depending on the product.
Electrical endurance — the number of operating cycles at rated load. This is always lower than mechanical endurance. For high-cycle applications, electrical endurance is the limiting figure.
Terminal marking — IEC 60947-5-1 requires terminals to be marked so the circuit can be traced. NO contacts are typically marked with numbers ending in 3 and 4 (e.g., 13-14). NC contacts are typically marked with numbers ending in 1 and 2 (e.g., 11-12). Verify the marking scheme matches your wiring documentation.

Normal service conditions including shock and vibration — the 2024 edition revised the requirements for shock and vibration. If your application involves significant vibration (machine tools, mobile equipment, compressors), confirm the product has been tested to the current edition’s vibration requirements, not just an older edition.
EMC requirements — control circuit devices can be sources of conducted and radiated interference, and they can also be susceptible to interference from variable frequency drives and other sources. The 2024 edition addresses EMC requirements. In panels with VFDs or other noise sources, this matters.
Pull-out tests — the 2024 edition added or revised pull-out test requirements for contact blocks and actuator assemblies. This is relevant for applications where vibration or cable tension could dislodge a contact block from its actuator.
Class II devices — if your application requires double or reinforced insulation (certain safety circuits, specific machinery directives), confirm the product is specifically rated as a Class II device under IEC 60947-5-1:2024, not just assumed to be safe because it is plastic-bodied.
Reed contact magnetic switches — if you are using magnetic switches for position sensing or door interlocking, confirm they are covered under IEC 60947-5-1 and check the specific magnetic actuation distance and force specifications.

Red mushroom-head push buttons are commonly used as emergency stop devices. IEC 60947-5-1 covers the electromechanical construction and ratings of those buttons. It does not, by itself, make a device a compliant emergency stop.
Emergency stop functions are governed by IEC 60947-5-5 (mechanical latching, direct opening action requirements) and by machine safety standards such as ISO 13850. A device used as an emergency stop must meet the direct opening action requirement — meaning the NC contact must open positively when the actuator is operated, regardless of contact welding or spring failure.
Do not assume that any red mushroom button is suitable for emergency stop use. Check that the specific product is rated and marked for emergency stop duty, and verify compliance with the applicable machine safety standard for your application. Local regulations and the machinery directive or equivalent in your jurisdiction may impose additional requirements.

These errors appear regularly in panel builds and procurement:
Using AC-rated contacts on DC circuits without checking the DC rating. DC interruption is more demanding. The DC rating is almost always lower than the AC rating at the same voltage.
Assuming all 22 mm products from different brands are interchangeable. The cutout diameter may match, but the contact block interface, mounting depth, and accessory compatibility often do not.
Specifying illumination voltage by assumption. A 24 V DC control circuit does not mean the lamp is 24 V DC. Some product families offer 24 V, 110 V, and 230 V lamp options in the same body. Ordering the wrong lamp voltage is a common mistake.
Ignoring electrical endurance for high-cycle applications. Mechanical endurance figures look impressive. Electrical endurance at rated load is the number that matters for longevity.
Treating the IP rating of the actuator head as the IP rating of the assembly. The rear of the assembly, including contact blocks and wiring, must also be considered. The IP rating of the complete assembly in its cutout is what protects the circuit.
Not verifying the edition of the standard the product was tested to. The 2024 edition introduced changes. For new designs, confirm the product was tested to the current edition if that matters for your compliance documentation.

DC circuits are harder to interrupt than AC circuits at the same voltage because AC current passes through zero twice per cycle, which naturally extinguishes the arc. DC has no zero crossing, so the arc must be mechanically extinguished. This means a contact block rated for 240 V AC / 10 A will typically have a lower DC voltage or current rating. Always check the DC rating explicitly for DC control circuits.
It depends on the environment. IP65 is a common minimum for panels exposed to wash-down or significant dust. IP67 or IP69K may be required for food processing or outdoor applications. The IP rating must be confirmed for the complete assembled device in its panel cutout — not just the actuator head. Check the product datasheet for the IP rating of the full assembly, and verify that the rating meets the requirements of your installation environment and any applicable local standards.
